Songs I Love: I Believe (1979)

When I poison my system, I take thoughts and twist them into shapes
I’m reachin’ my nadir and I haven’t an idea of what to do
I’m painting by numbers but can’t find the colors that fill you in
I’m not even knowing if I’m coming or going, if to end or begin

When you consider the British response to the 2 minute and change Pop fury of the Ramones you’d never think to highlight a bristling piece of beat poetry set to music clocking in at just a few ticks over 7 minutes, but, in ‘I Believe’ (from 1979’s Different Kind of Tension) the Buzzcocks unleashed one of the great rock tracks. RIP Pete Shelley.

There. Is. No. Love. In. This. World. Anymore…. (repeat)
